The bridge-tunnel spans 17.6 miles from Cape Charles, Virginia to Virginia Beach, Virginia. It includes several notable features such as the Thimble Shoal Tunnel, which is 5,738 feet long and descends 90 feet below sea level at Chesapeake Beach. The Chesapeake Channel Tunnel is 5,423 feet long. The structure also includes four man-made islands that are 30 feet above water, built using 6,000,000 tons of sand fill and 1,375,000 tons of granite boulders for rip-rap. The bridge-tunnel is supported by 2,523 concrete piles, each 54 inches in diameter. It also incorporates two bridges, the North Channel Bridge and the Fisherman Inlet Bridge, with specific horizontal and vertical clearances. The depth of water along the route ranges from 25 to 70 feet. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is considered the Eighth Wonder of the World and is a remarkable feat of engineering.
