Back of PostcardExploring the History of the Little Church on the Hill in Oakhurst, California

Welcome to the Little Church on the Hill in Oakhurst, California! This historic church, built in 1892, holds a rich history within its walls. Situated in what was once known as Fresno Flats, this church stands as a reminder of the old mining camps that once thrived in the area.

Fresno Flats, now known as Oakhurst, was home to the first placer-mining camp in Madera County. Originally named Coarse Gold (and later Texas Flats), this area saw an influx of miners in 1849 after five Texans struck gold. As the gold rush continued, other mining camps such as Fine Gold, Temperance Flat, Cassidy’s Bar, Soldier Bar, and Rootville emerged in the region.

During the 1850s, this area was a small but prosperous mining district, with many forgotten names and abandoned camps scattered throughout the landscape. While most of these camps have faded into obscurity, some traces of the Quartz mines that once operated in the area can still be found today.

This postcard, published by Royal Pictures in Colton, California, captures the essence of the Little Church on the Hill. The photo-color by Merle Porter brings to life the beauty and history of this historic church.
