The postcard is an In Memoriam tribute to Richard Rowland Kirkland, a Confederate soldier from the 2nd South Carolina Volunteers during the American Civil War. Kirkland is remembered for his act of compassion at the Battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862, where he risked his life to bring water to wounded Union soldiers on the battlefield.
