The postcard features an image of the whaling bark Josephine with its sails drying in New Bedford, Massachusetts. In 1849, New Bedford was a prominent port for the whaling industry, with 85 whale ships operating from there. These ships collectively landed an impressive 92,106 barrels of whale oil on the docks that year.
