Bandelier National Monument is a 33,000-acre park located near Los Alamos, New Mexico. It preserves the homes and territory of the Ancestral Puebloans, who inhabited the area from around 1150 to 1550 AD. The monument features numerous cave dwellings, petroglyphs, and other archaeological sites that offer insight into the lives of these ancient people.

Frijoles Canyon, where the Cave Room is located, is a picturesque canyon with a stream running through it. Visitors can explore the canyon on hiking trails that lead to various archaeological sites, including cliff dwellings and petroglyphs. The canyon is also home to a diverse array of plant and animal species, making it a popular destination for nature lovers.

The soft cliff rock, known as tuff, was formed from volcanic ash that solidified over time. The Ancestral Puebloans used this easily carved rock to create their homes and other structures, taking advantage of its natural properties to build sheltered spaces in the cliffs. The ladder in the Cave Room allows modern visitors to experience a small glimpse of what life was like for these ancient people.
