The postcard features the Mormon Battalion Monument in Salt Lake City, Utah. Erected in 1927, it commemorates the men who volunteered in 1846 to march from Council Bluffs, Iowa, to San Diego, California, a journey of 2,000 miles during the Mexican-American War. This march is known as the longest infantry march in history. Notably, seven members of the battalion were involved in the discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill in 1848. The monument symbolizes the sacrifices and contributions of these early Mormon pioneers to American history.
