The postcard depicts the entrance to the National Military Cemetery in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where about 13,000 Union soldiers are buried. The gateway was built by the Government at a cost of around $15,000. The cemetery is noted for its beauty and size, being one of the largest and most beautiful cities of the dead in the United States. Chattanooga was a significant Civil War battleground, and the cemetery serves as a memorial to the soldiers who fought and died there. The postcard was published by T. H. Payne & Co. in Chattanooga.
