Back of PostcardThe Hoover Dam, located on the Nevada/Arizona border in the United States, was constructed between 1931 and 1935 at a cost of $165 million. It was engineered by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and serves to impound the Colorado River, creating Lake Mead. The dam is 1,244 ft (379 m) long, with a base width of 660 ft (201 m) and a crest width of 45 ft (13.7 m). It stands at a height of 726.4 ft (221 m) and has a thickness of 660 ft (201 m) at the base. The dam contains a total of 4.36 million yards (3.64 million m) of concrete. It features intake towers, a spillway, a powerhouse, and control gates. The dam attracts daily visitors ranging from 13,000 to 16,000 people and is home to the largest man-made reservoir in the U.S., Lake Mead, with a shoreline of 550 miles (885 km). The reservoir has a capacity of 1.24 trillion cubic feet and covers a surface area of 247 square miles (640 km2). The dam houses 17 generators and occupies 10 acres of floor space. It generates an annual power of 4,000 gigawatts. The Hoover Dam is a popular tourist destination and is situated within the first national park in the U.S. designated for recreation, providing 290 square miles of water in the lakes Mead and Mohave.
