The Cape Cod Canal in Massachusetts was opened in 1914 after being constructed over five years by the Boston, Cape Cod, and New York Canal Company. The 8-mile waterway runs through Bourne and Sagamore, providing a shortcut from Massachusetts Bay to Long Island Sound.
