Washington is known as the Evergreen State and its capital is Olympia. The state flower is the Western Rhododendron, the state bird is the Willow Goldfinch, and the state tree is the Western Hemlock. Washington became the 42nd state to join the United States on November 11, 1889. The state song is “Washington My Home” and the motto is “Alki (By and By)”. The highest elevation in Washington is Mount Rainier at 14,410 ft, and the lowest elevation is along the Pacific Coast.
