This postcard features a historic route called El Camino Real, also known as The Royal Road, which is now modern U.S. Highway 101. This road connects the 21 Spanish Missions in California from San Diego to Sonoma. The missions were located about one day’s journey apart by horseback and were sometimes referred to as “The King’s Highway.” Today, U.S. Highway 101 follows the approximate route of the original dirt path. The postcard also mentions that there are hundreds of road signs in the shape of mission bells along U.S. 101. The photograph on the postcard is copyrighted by Robert P. Lowman and was published by Lowman Publishing Co. in Arroyo Grande, CA. The postcard includes the cities of San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Sonoma, and it is printed in the USA.
